These Victorian woven hair torpedo earrings are a beautiful and fascinating piece of history. This pair of earring is woven from brunette human hair with 14k gold appointments. They are all original and in wearable condition. This pair is unusually fabulous for the quality of the hair work mesh and their substantial size. Circa 1850.
During the Victorian Era it was popular to weave your hair into a piece of jewelry as a sentimental gift for a loved one. Women saved their hair for this purpose; some wove the hair themselves while some employed specialty jewelers who would weave the hair and mount it in elaborate designs. Spring-like wires were inserted inside the puffy pieces to help retain their shape.
The torpedo was a very popular earring form from the very early 19th Century. These long, dangling, pendulum shaped earrings were all the rage and can be found in gold, silver, gemstone, the popular gold substitute pinchbeck and human hair.
Details.....3" long, 14.4mm wide at drop. They are in very good condition for their age. You should always expect some wear on vintage and antique jewels, we consider it part of the charm.
