WWII RAF Cricket Medal Silver & Gold Fob

A lovely gold on sterling silver English medal fob. This is a wonderful historical piece dating to World War II. The front of the medal has a gold shield engraved with the letters F.H. The back is engraved: 925/D FLIGHT R.A.F. F. HAWORTH CRICKET 1941. The piece is hallmarked for Birmingham, sterling silver and the years 1938-1939. It is also signed with the maker's mark for Herbert Bushell & Sons, a silversmith producing in Birmingham at the time. This fob will make a very handsome pendant, a sterling jump ring is attached to make it easy to hang on a chain.

This medal is rich with history. R.A.F. is an acronym for the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force. Formed in 1918, The Royal Air Force is the world's oldest independent national air force. 925 refers to a Barrage Balloon Squadron of the Auxiliary Air Force out of East Lancashire. 'D' Flight was the 202 Squadron Air Sea Rescue Flight. Cricket is, of course, a bat-and-ball sport that originated in England in the 1590s and has since gained international popularity. There were a number of F. Haworths that flew with the R.A.F. during WWII. Despite all of this information I was unable to determine which F. Haworth this medal was presented to, but we do know he must have been a very good cricket player.

Details.....The medal measures 1" by 1.36". In Very Good Vintage Condition. You should always expect some wear on vintage and antique jewels, we consider it part of the charm.
