A fascinating Zuni fetish necklace with Corn Maiden figures. Fetishes in the form of animals such as bears, frogs, turtles, a variety of birds, children, and infants have been carved from buffalo bone. The central figure is a Corn Maiden with a baby. These vivacious little sculptures are strung with shell and turquoise heishi beads to form a dramatic festoon necklace. The necklace has a traditional wrapped textile back. When worn, this necklace displays a tableaux of vital natural abundance. It's a true work of art. Circa 1960.
Zuni fetishes depict animals such as the wolf, badger, bear, mountain lion, eagle, mole, frog, deer, ram, and others. In the Zuni cosmology, and those of neighboring tribes, each animal is believed to have inherent powers or qualities that may aid the owner. True fetishes are sacred and do not leave the village. However, Navajo and Zuni artists create "fetishes" that are for sale.
Across Native American cultures, the Corn Maidens symbolize the prayers of the people for a bountiful harvest.
Heishi (meaning "shell") beads are small disc or tube-shaped beads made of shells or stones, traditionally cut, polished and drilled by hand. They originate with the Kewa Pueblo, previously known as the Pueblo of Santo Domingo, people of New Mexico.
Details.....The necklace is 32" long. The Corn Maiden carving measures 3.08" by 0.66". In Very Good Vintage Condition. You should always expect some wear on vintage and antique jewels, we consider it part of the charm.
