This talismanic brooch is set with a Zuni bear fetish. As cute as he is powerful, the bear is carved from icy white quartz. He wears an offering bundle of coral, turquoise, and mother of pearl tied about his waist. The bear is set in a hand-cut bezel on a sterling silver backing, wirework frames the bezel, and its little toes are silver beads. The brooch has both a pin and a bale, so it may also be worn as a pendant. The back of the brooch is stamped "Zuni".
Zuni fetishes depict animals such as the wolf, badger, bear, mountain lion, eagle, mole, frog, deer, ram, and others. In the Zuni cosmology, and those of neighboring tribes, each animal is believed to have inherent powers or qualities that may aid the owner. True fetishes are sacred and do not leave the village. However, Navajo and Zuni artists create "fetishes" that are for sale.
The Bear is the guardian and master of the west. His fetish represents strength, self-knowledge, healing, and protection. An offering bundle gives extra strength and power to the fetish.
